The Sonia Gandhi biopic isn’t happening any time soon but a film on the romance between Nehru and Edwina Mountbatten may hit theatres in 2011.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has allowed shooting of The Indian Summer — a Hollywood movie about Partition and Independence with the affair between India’s first prime minister and the wife of the last viceroy as the central plot — but with riders.
The ministry wants four scenes deleted — a kiss between Nehru and Edwina; a dancing scene; one where Nehru says ‘I Love You’; and a scene showing them in bed.
“An expert committee examined the script and wanted certain scenes that show Nehru in a poor light deleted,” said a ministry official requesting anonymity.
The film will star Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as Edwina and Hugh Grant as Lord Mountbatten. Who plays Nehru is yet to be decided.
The ministry has also told Mashraba Films, the producer, to stick to the script. Any deviation will need prior permission of the government. It should also be stated that the film is a work of fiction and be cleared by a government representative — either in India or in its mission abroad — before its release.
The film will be shot in eight northern states, including Punjab, J&K, Delhi.
The ministry gave the clearance on August 3. Mashroba hasn’t raised any objections so far.
