Going to the shops takes up THREE years of a woman's life.

For the men dragged on a Saturday afternoon shopping trip it will come as little surprise.

A woman shops for almost three years of her life, according to research.

But what may be surprising for her partner is that not all that time is spent browsing the latest fashions.

Each year a woman will spend almost as much time buying food as buying clothes.

With 84 grocery shops in the year, she will shop for 94 hours and 55 minutes to stock up on household essentials.

On the other hand, 100 hours and 48 minutes are spent trawling the shops for clothes.

However, when time shopping for shoes and accessories, not to mention window browsing, is added, a large proportion of the 25,184 hours and 53 minutes women spend shopping in a lifetime is fashion focused.

Buying time

In total 90 trips a year are dedicated to keeping up appearances - 30 to shop for clothes, 15 for shoes, 18 for accessories and 27 for bathroom essentials.

The allure of the shop displays takes grip at least 51 times a year.

The survey of 2,000 women found they make on average 301 individual shopping trips - lasting a total of 399 hours and 46 minutes - every year.

Over 63 years, this means they will spend two years and ten months shopping.

One woman for whom the survey results come as no surprise is Alexis Hall.

The 41-year-old was a self-confessed shopaholic who stopped the habit when she realised she owed more than £30,000 on her credit cards.

Last night, speaking from her home in Glasgow, she said she was not surprised the average woman spent such a large amount of her lifetime shopping - but was horrified at her own shopping.

Miss Hall, who has written In the Red - The Diary of a Recovering Shopaholic, said: 'I spent money I didn't have every day. It just didn't matter and I couldn't stop.'

A spokesman for research company OnePoll, which carried out the survey, said: 'Many men seem to think women only shop when they are buying clothes for themselves.

'But they quite often shop for the entire family and that can be incredibly hard work.'
